Im Südwesten Afrikas liegt die ehemalige portugiesische Kolonie Angola. Der Name Angola leitet sich vom Wort „Ngola“, einem Königstitel der Könige von Ndongo, ab. Die größte Einnahmequelle Angolas sind seine reichen Bodenschätze, hauptsächlich Öl und Diamanten. Angola ist mittlerweile sogar Chinas größter Öl-Zulieferer. Interessanterweise ist die Flagge Angolas an die Flagge der ehemaligen Sowjet-Union angelehnt. Ein 27-jähriger Bürgerkrieg hat unter anderem zur Folge, das Angola politisch sehr instabil ist und autoritär regiert wird. Das Fotografieren von Regierungsgebäuden oder militärischen Einrichtungen zum Beispiel ist strafbar. Die typisch-angolanische Musikrichtung Semba beeinflusste viele Strömungen der Musikgeschichte, unter anderem auch den brasilianischen Samba.

Wenn man bedenkt, dass die angolanische Fußballnationalmannschaft erst seit 1986 an WM-Qualifikationen teilnimmt, war die erste und bisher einzige WM-Qualifikation für Deutschland 2006 natürlich ein sensationeller Erfolg für die „Palancas Negras“ (die schwarzen Antilopen). Dabei lief die überraschende Qualifikation mehr als glücklich für Angola: in der ersten Runde wurde der Tschad mühevoll nur aufgrund der Auswärtstorregel geschlagen, nach der Gruppenphase landete man trotz deutlich schlechteren Torverhältnisses vor dem punktgleichen Nigeria, das man im direkten Vergleich mit 1:0/1:1 geschlagen hatte. Bei der WM selbst schlugen sich die Angolaner dann aber mehr als achtbar, trotzen dem Iran und Mexiko sogar jeweils ein Unentschieden ab – für das erste WM-Tor Angolas überhaupt (Flávio da Silva Amado zum 1:1 gegen den Iran) waren in Angola ein Handgeld von 100.000 € sowie ein schicker Sportwagen ausgelobt.

Mein Angola-Trikot – ein weiteres Shirt aus der schlichten Gummi-Puma-Reihe – bekam ich dankenswerter Weise vom guten Jens Barthel im Tausch gegen ein Trikot des französischen Rekordmeisters AS Saint-Etienne. Vielen Dank dafür, Jens!

In South West Africa you find the former Portuguese colony of Angola. The name Angola returns to the word “Ngola” which is a something like a royal title of Ndongo. Angola’s biggest source of income are its rich natural resources, mostly oil and diamonds. Nowadays, Angola is even the biggest oil supplier for China. The Angolan flag returns to the flag of the former Soviet Union. After a civil war of almost 27 years, Angola is very instable and governed dictatorially. For example, it is illegal to take photos of government buildings or military institutions. Angola’s typical music style, Semba, influenced a lot of streams in music history, amongst others even the Brazilian Samba.

Remembering that the Angolan football team tries to qualify for World Cups only since 1986, their first and only participation in Germany 2006 was a sensational success for the “Palancas Negras” (the black antelopes). Nevertheless, the qualifiers had been very lucky for them: in first round, they beat Chad very hardly only because of away goals, after the group stage they landed above Nigeria with same points and less goals but a victory of 1-0/1-1 in the direct clash. During the WC final round, they put up a very good fight and even came to a draw against Iran and Mexico – for the first Angolan WC goal ever (Flávio da Silva Amado scored the 1-1 against Iran), the Angolan FA payed € 100,000 and a nice sports car.

Thankfully, I got my Angola shirt – another one from the gummy puma series – from Jens Barthel as a swap for the French record champion AS Saint-Etienne. Thank you a lot, mate!

ESTONIA

Die Esten sind ein nettes kleines Völkchen mit nur rund 1,3 Millionen Einwohnern, am obersten Rand des Baltikums. Aufsehen erregte Estland vor allem, als es 2011 die SMS-Wahl einführte. Estland ist außerdem das erste Land mit einer E-Regierung, was den Politikern den üblichen lästigen Papierkrieg erspart. Nicht nur dahingehend zeigt sich Estland besonders fortschrittlich, weiterhin ist im estnischen Grundgesetz vermerkt, dass jeder Bürger das Recht auf einen kostenlosen Internetzugang hat und außerdem jede/r Schüler/in das Recht auf ein warmes Mittagessen bis zur 9. Klasse. Besonders sehenswert: die malerische Hauptstadt Tallinn, Europas Kulturhauptstadt 2011. Die gewöhnungsbedürftigste estnische Spezialität: marinierter Bär.

1920 trug die estnische Fußballnationalmannschaft ihr erstes Länderspiel aus, nach der Annektion durch die Sowjetunion absolvierten die Esten erst 1992 ihr erstes offiziell von der FIFA anerkanntes Länderspiel gegen Slowenien. Estland ist leider eines der schwächeren Teams auf dem europäischen Kontinent, allerdings auch das einzige Team Europas, das bereits gegen jedes UEFA-Mitglied ein Länderspiel bestritten hat – sogar gegen Gibraltar. Bis 2009 war der Este Martin Reim mit 157 Länderspielen außerdem europäischer Rekordnationalspieler. Einer der bekanntesten Kicker Estlands, Verteidiger Ragnar Klavan vom FC Augsburg, ist der erste und bisher einzige Este in der Deutschen Bundesliga.

An dieser Stelle möchte ich meine estnischen Freunde Eneli Õigus und Marek Naaris sowie das gesamte Team und alle Fans des Drittligisten FC Elva herzlich grüßen! Vor gut einem Jahr, als ich noch passionierter Sammler und Unterstützer kleiner Vereine und ihrer Trikots war, habe ich beim FC Elva einige Trikots bestellt. Die Leute dort sind einfach nur unfassbar freundlich und hilfsbereit. Dieses Jahr habe ich erneut einige Shirts bestellt, dazu diesmal eines der Nationalmannschaft mit dem Flock des überaus sympathischen Alo Bärengrub, den ich übrigens schon einmal mit dem gesamten Team seines Vereins Nomme Kalju am Frankfurter Flughafen getroffen habe und der Sascha dankenswerter Weise sein getragenes Trikot geschickt hat. Es handelt sich bei meinem Trikot sogar um die Spielerversion mit den lustigen Atmungslöchern an den Seiten. Das schicke blaue Nike-Trikot fällt vom Design her zwar relativ schlicht aus, ich liebe allerdings die außergewöhnliche Beflockung in einem typisch estnischen Kalligraphie-Stil sowie den kleinen Igel, der die Unbeugsamkeit der Underdogs symbolisiert. Ich wünsche meinen estnischen Freunden noch viele erfolgreiche Spiele und eines Tages die WM-Qualifikation!

The Estonians are a nice small nation with only round 1,3 mio. Inhabitants, right on top of the Baltic states. Estonia mainly caused some rumors for introducing the SMS election in 2011. It is also the first country in the world with an E-government, which spares the politicians the usual red tape. Not only because of that, Estonia is one of the most progressive countries, in the Estonian constitution law there is written that there’s a right for every citizen for a free internet access and also for every pupil for a warm lunch until the 9^th grade. Worth seeing: picturesque capital Tallinn, European Capital of Culture in 2011. The very special Estonian dish: marinated bear.

In 1920, Estonia played its first international match ever, after the annexation by the Soviets they played their first official FIFA match in 1992 against Slovenia. Estonia is one of the weakest football teams in Europe, but at least it’s the only country in Europe that has played an international against every member of the UEFA so far – even against Gibraltar. Until 2009, Estonian Martin Reim was European record national player with 157 caps. One of the most popular Estonian footballers, defender Ragnar Klavan from FC Augsburg, is the first and only Estonian player ever to play in the German Bundesliga.

At this place, I’d like to greet my Estonian friends Eneli Õigus and Marek Naaris and of course the whole team and the fans from 3^rd division club FC Elva! About a year ago when I was a passionate collector and supporter of small football clubs and their jerseys, I ordered a few shirts from FC Elva. The people there have always been incredibly nice and helpful. This year, I ordered some more Elva shirts and as well a shirt of the national team with the printing of the very sympathetic Alo Bärengrub, who I met once with the hole team of his club Nomme Kalju at Frankfurt airport and who thankfully sent a matchworn shirt of him to Sascha. My shirt is actually the player edition with the small holes in its sides. The design of the blue Nike shirt itself is a little plain, but I really love the printing in a typical Estonian style of calligraphy and of course the small hedgehog, symbol for the bravery of the underdogs. I wish you, my Estonian friends, some more successful internationals and the WC qualification one day!

NORTHERN IRELAND

Mit Nordirland hat sich nun auch der letzte Staat aus dem Vereinigten Königreich in meiner Sammlung eingefunden. In erster Linie ist Nordirland leider das Paradebeispiel für politische Instabilität in der „Ersten Welt“, seine gewaltsamen Auseinandersetzungen nach dem irischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg hielt bis weit in die 1990er-Jaher Europa in Atem (die irische Band The Cranberries verarbeitet den Nordirland-Konflikt in ihrem größten Hit „Zombie“). Ähnlich wie Nachbar Irland bietet auch Nordirland vielen Touristen beeindruckende Landschaftszüge. Einige Touristen zieht es auch nach Nordirland, weil es dort einige Burgen und Schlösser gibt, in denen es der Legende nach spuken soll. Außerdem wurde im Belfast Harbour die legendäre Titanic gebaut.

Wie in Großbritannien üblich sind auch in Nordirland Fußball und Rugby die beliebtesten Sportarten. Als gesamtirische Mannschaft bestritt das Team bereits 1882 sein erstes offizielles Länderspiel, seit 1921 tritt die Mannschaft offiziell als Nationalteam Nordirlands an. Bislang konnte sich die „Green and White Army“ bereits für 3 Weltmeisterschafts-Endrunden qualifizieren und erreichte dabei zweimal das Viertelfinale. Größter Fußballer in der Geschichte Nordirlands war zweifelsohne der legendäre George Best ("Ich habe viel von meinem Geld für Alkohol, Weiber und schnelle Autos ausgegeben. Den Rest habe ich einfach verprasst.").

Mein Nordirland-Trikot bekam ich dankenswerter Weise zusammen mit dem rumänischen von meinem Mitspieler Marius Försch – im Tausch gegen Bier. Das klassische Umbro Design mit den glänzenden Längsstreifen in kräftigem Grün gefällt mir richtig gut.

Finally, the last country of  the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, found its way into my collection. First of all, Northern Ireland unluckily is known as the best example for political instability in the “first world”, its violent disputes after the Irish war of independence caused a stir in Europe until the late 90s (the Irish band The Cranberries wrote their greatest hit “Zombie” about those conflicts). Very similar to neighbor Ireland, Northern Ireland also offers a lot of very impressive landscapes for tourists. A lot of tourists also like to visit Northern Ireland because of its lots of haunted castles.  The famous Titanic was also built in the harbor of Belfast.

As it’s usual in Great Britain, football and rugby are the most popular sports in Northern Ireland. Already in 1882, they performed their first official international as an entire Irish team, since 1921 they officially play as the national team of Northern Ireland. Until today, the “Green and White Army” made it to three WC final rounds, reaching the quarter finals twice. The greatest footballer in the history of Northern Ireland definitely was legendary George Best (“I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.”).

Thankfully, I got my Northern Ireland shirt together with the Romanian one from my team mate Marius Försch again – as a swap for beer. I really like the classy Umbro design with its shiny longitudinal stripes.

ROMANIA

In erster Linie verbindet man Rumänien, besonders die rumänische Region Transsilvanien, mit Graf Dracula, dem berühmtesten Vampir der Literaturgeschichte, der dort sein Unwesen getrieben haben soll. Die Hauptstadt Bukarest ist immerhin die sechstgrößte Hauptstadt Europas. Besonders beeindruckend sind außerdem die Riesenregenwürmer, die man in Rumänien antreffen kann. Diese werden bis zu 1,5 Meter lang und sind so dick wie ein Gartenschlauch, ähneln ansonsten aber den Würmern in unseren Gefilden. Besonders grüßen möchte ich an dieser Stelle auch den ehemaligen rumänischen Torjäger von Fortuna Frankfurt, Bogdan „Boom Boom“ Borcea.

Die rumänischen Fußballer nahmen interessanter Weise an den ersten drei Fußball-Weltmeisterschaften am Stück teil, ehe man nach einer längeren Durststrecke erst in den 90er-Jahren wieder für Aufsehen sorgte und bei der WM 1994 mit dem überragenden Gheorghe Hagi sogar Argentinien schlug und bis ins Viertelfinale vordrang. Weitere rumänische Fußballstars sind Cristian Chivu und Adrian Mutu.

Mein Rumänien-Trikot bekam ich von meinem Mitspieler Marius Försch im Tausch gegen Bier – vielen Dank dafür. Die Farbkombination aus gelb, rot und blau gefällt mir ausgesprochen gut, allerdings hätte das Wappen gerne ein bisschen edler verarbeitet sein dürfen…

Most people connect Romania, especially the Romanian region of Transylvania, with Count Dracula, the most popular vampire in literature. Romanian capital is at least the sixth biggest capital in Europe. Very impressive: the giant earthworms which you can find in Romania. They are up to 1,5 meters long and as thick as a garden hose, but apart from that they look very similar to the worms round here. At this place, I’d like to great former Romanian Fortuna Frankfurt goalgetter Bogdan “Boom Boom” Borcea.

Very interesting is the fact that the Romanian footballers participated in the first three WC ever to be played. After a long lean spell, they caused some rumors again in the 90s with great Gheorghe Hagi. In WC 1994, they even beat Argentina and made it to the quarter finals. Other Romanian football stars are Crisitan Chivu and Adrian Mutu.

I got my Romanian shit from my team mate Marius Försch as a swap for some beer – thank you very much! I really like the color combination of yellow, red and blue, but the badge could have been embroidered if you ask me…

ARGENTINA

Aufgrund seiner großen Nord-Süd-Ausdehnung verfügt Argentinien über ein großes Spektrum an verschiedenen Klima- und Vegetationszonen. Sein Name leitet sich vom lateinischen Wort für Silber („argentum“) ab. In Argentinien findet sich außerdem der Aconcagua, der höchste Berg Südamerikas. Argentinien verdanken wir nicht nur den Tango und erstklassige Rumpsteaks, sondern auch Ernesto „Che“ Guevara, die weltweit ersten Zeichentrickfilme und zahlreiche Funde von Dinosaurier-Skeletten. Die argentinische Hauptstadt Buenos Aires verfügt über die höchste Psychoanalytiker-Dichte der Welt.

Die argentinische Fußballnationalmannschaft zählt mit 2 Weltmeister-Titeln und satten 14 Südamerika-Meisterschaften zu den erfolgreichsten Auswahlen weltweit und hat mit Diego Maradona und Lionel Messi zwei der größten Fußballer aller Zeiten hervor gebracht. Mir persönlich ist die „Albiceleste“ (die „Himmelblaue“) eher unsympathisch, da sie als sehr heißblütig gilt und in Spielen gegen Deutschland gerne auch mal überhart zu Werke ging. Gott sei Dank hat sich im WM-Finale 2014 die bessere Mannschaft durchgesetzt. Besonders kurios: lange Zeit vergab der argentinische Verband die Rückennummern bei Turnieren alphabetisch, erst Diego Maradonna, die „Hand Gottes“ himself, durchbrach dies, in dem er auf seine legendäre Nummer 10 bestand. Mit einem 12:0 über Ecuador holte Argentinien den bislang höchsten Sieg einer südamerikanischen Fußballmannschaft aller Zeiten.

Mein argentinisches Langarm-Trikot aus der WM-Qualifikation 2006 bekam ich abermals vom guten Andreas Beuler – muchas grácias dafür! Es ist in den traditionellen hellblau-weißen Längsstreifen gehalten, besonders gut gefallen mir der Quali-Patch, der ungewöhnlich weit unten am Arm aufgenäht ist, und natürlich der Flock des legendären Mittelfeldregisseurs Juán Roman Riquelme. Ein weiteres sehr geiles Shirt in meiner Sammlung – aus Südamerika fehlt mir jetzt nur noch Peru!

Very special: the Argentine FA used to award the jersey numbers alphabetically until Diego Maradona, the “Hand of God” himself, decided to insist on his number 10. Argentina’s 12-0 against Ecuador is still the highest win of a South American football team of all time.

Again, I got my Argentina long-sleeve jersey from the qualifiers for WC 2006 from Andreas Beuler – muchas grácias for that! Of course, it has the traditional sky blue and white longitudinal stripes. Especially, I like the qualifier patch, which is unusually placed at the bottom of the sleeve, and of course the printing of great midfielder Juán Roman Riquelme. Another awesome shirt for my collection – by now, I’m only missing Peru to finish South America!

IRELAND

Irland hat hierzulande vor allem aufgrund seiner Trinkkultur, den zahlreichen Irish Pubs und der Folk-Musik viele Sympathisanten. Nicht nur am Nationalfeiertag, dem St. Patrick’s Day, zeigen sich die Iren gerne von ihrer feierlustigen Seite. Außerdem erfreuen sich auch die grünen Hügellandschaften Irlands einer großen touristischen Beliebtheit. Besonders cool finde ich persönlich auch die Leprechauns, kleine grüne Kobolde, die ebenso wie Harfe und Kleeblatt das Nationalsymbol Irlands sind. Mit 7 Erfolgen ist Irland übrigens auch Rekordsieger des Eurovision Song Contest.

Aufgrund ihrer herausragenden Fans – ich selbst durfte unlängst in Gelsenkirchen die beeindruckenden Gesänge der irischen Anhänger beim Länderspiel live bestaunen – ist die irische Fußballnationalmannschaft sehr sympathisch. Große Erfolge konnten die „Boys in green“ bislang allerdings nicht erreichen, bei der WM 1990 zog man immerhin ins Viertelfinale ein.

Als Trikotsammler ist es besonders schwer, ein Irland-Trikot ohne aufgedruckten Sponsor zu ergattern. Mein weißes Umbro-Trikot mit der schwarz-grünen Schärpe bekam ich dankenswerter Weise von Andreas Beuler. Obwohl es wie ein originales Trikot anmutet, habe ich letzten Endes keinen Beweis finden können, ob dieses Trikot jemals von der Nationalmannschaft getragen wurde. Selbst auf einer Homepage mit lückenlos allen irischen Jerseys seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts nicht. Dennoch bereichert dieses schöne Stück meine Sammlung.

Because of its drinking culture, the tons of Irish Pubs and the folk music, Ireland has a lot of sympathizers round here. Not only on their national holiday, popular St. Patrick’s day, the Irish show themselves in a good temper to party. Also a lot of tourists love Irelands cliffs and the green hills. I really like the leprechauns, small green goblins, who are the Irish national symbol besides shamrock and harp. Ireland is also record winner of the Eurovision Song Contest with 7 victories.

A lot of football fans like the Irish team, mostly because of its awesome supporters – I recently saw the Irish fans and their impressive chants in an international match in Gelsenkirchen. The “Boys in green” did never have that much success unluckily, at least they made it to the quarter finals in WC 1990.

As a football shirt collector, it is a little difficult to find an Irish jersey without a sponsor on it. Thankfully, I got my Ireland shirt from Andreas Beuler. Although it looks very legit in my eyes, I don’t have any evidence after all whether this design was ever worn by the national team or not. I did not even find this shirt on a page of all Ireland jerseys since the ending 19^th century. Nevertheless, it’s another beautiful piece for my collection.

ITALY

(Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio)

Pizza, Pasta, Tiramisu, Panna Cotta, Antipasti, Mortadella, Salami, Parmesan, Mozzarella, Gorgonzola, Pecorino, Gelato, Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato, Chianti und Barolo – spricht man über Italien kommt man nicht umhin, über die zahlreichen Hochgenüsse zu sprechen, die uns die italienische Küche gebracht hat. Das Gebiet des heutigen Italiens, welches die charakteristische Form eines Stiefels zu haben scheint, war in der Antike Kernregion des Römischen Reiches. Weiterhin verdanken wir Italien nicht nur viele beeindruckende Bauwerke, Kunstschätze und klassische Musik, sondern auch Ursprünge der weltweiten Mafia. Ich persönlich verbinde mit Italien in erster Linie einen ganzen Haufen Italiener, die mit mir beim FC Fortuna Frankfurt Fußball spielen. Andrea, Giovanni, Patrizio – vi saluto cordialmente! J

Es ist kein Geheimnis, dass das deutsche Fußballherz spätestens seit 2006 keine Fußball-Nationalmannschaft der Welt mehr verachtet als die Italiens. Gemeinhin gilt der sehr defensiv ausgerichtete Catenaccio-Stil als sehr unattraktive Spielweise und die italienischen Kicker als schauspieltalentiert und fallsüchtig. Auch wenn ich den Italienern bis ans Ende aller Tage tausende unberechtigte Foulelfmeter gegen sich wünsche, verdienen bislang 4 erreichte Weltmeister- sowie ein Europameistertitel meinen absoluten Respekt. Zuletzt hat sich der Fußball der Italiener hauptsächlich unter Cesare Prandelli sehr zum Positiven verändert. Maldini, Baggio, Del Piero, Baresi, Buffon, Totti, Cannavaro, Pirlo, Balotelli – die Liste italienischer Weltklasse-Fußballer könnte man ähnlich lange ausführen wie die eingangs erwähnte Liste von Lebensmitteln.

Das aktuelle Trikot der modebewussten Italiener bekam ich dankenswerterweise vom guten Jens Barthel im Tausch gegen ein Trikot des FC Porto – grazie mille, Jens! Das Trikot in Polo-Shirt-Optik ist zwar sehr edel verarbeitet, manchmal ist dann aber doch weniger mehr. Bitte seht mir nach, dass ich den ellenlangen Motivationstext im Kragen des Puma-Trikots an dieser Stelle nicht übersetze.

Furthermore, we owe the Italians not only a lot of impressive buildings, works of art and classical music, but also the origins of the world wide Mafia. Me in personal, I connect Italy firstly with the lots of Italians who I am currently playing amongst at FC Fortuna Frankfurt. Andrea, Giovanni, Patrizio – vi salute cordialmente! J

It’s not a big secret that there is no other national team on earth we Germans hate that much as the Italian team, especially since 2006. In General, the Catenaccio style is known to be a very unattractive art of playing football, and Italian footballers often showed-off their awesome talents in acting and falling down. Although I wish them thousands of unjustified foul penalties against them, I do really respect that they have already won 4 WC titles and one Euro as well. Lately, their way of playing football became a little more acceptable, especially under Cesare Prandelli. Maldini, Baggio, Del Piero, Baresi, Buffon, Totti, Cannavaro, Pirlo, Balotelli – the list of world class Italian footballers one could carry on endlessly as the list of food at the beginning.

I thankfully got the actual Italian jersey from Jens Barthel as a swap against a shirt from FC Porto – grazie mille, Jens! The shirt in polo optic is processed very well, but sometimes I think “less is more”. Please be clement that I do not translate the long motivation text printed into the collar of the Puma shirt.

VENEZUELA

(Federación Venezolana de Fútbol)

Ähnlich wie Paraguay verfügt auch Venezuela über eine Vielzahl unfassbarer Wasserfälle, darunter auch der Salto Ángel, mit 979 Metern der weltweit höchste seiner Zunft. Venezuela gilt als eine der ältesten Demokratien Südamerikas und schaffte bereits 1854 die Sklaverei ab. Seinen Namen verdankt das Land seinen Entdeckern, welche damals von der Architektur auf dem Wasser sehr angetan waren und Venezuela seinen Namen in Anlehnung an die italienische Stadt als „Kleines Venedig“ gaben. Bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts war Venezuela der größte Ölexporteur der Welt und ist auch Mitbegründer der OPEC. Die Frauen aus Venezuela gelten außerdem als besonders schön, denn ein anderes Land stellte bereits so viele Gewinnerinnen bei Miss-World- und Miss-Universe-Wahlen wie Venezuela (zuletzt Gabriela Isler 2013).

Der Nationalsport Venezuelas ist Baseball, außerdem sind Hahnenkämpfe außerordentlich beliebt. Lange Zeit wurde Fußball allenfalls von Universitätsmannschaften gespielt, weshalb Venezuela bis heute in der Entwicklung des südamerikanischen Fußballs deutlich hinterher hinkt. Venezuela ist das einzige Mitglied der CONMEBOL, welches sich noch nie für eine WM-Endrunde qualifizieren konnte und welches noch nie ein Länderspiel gegen Deutschland bestritten hat. Seit 1966 versuchen die Venezolaner ihr Glück in der WM-Qualifikation und wurden bis 1998 konsequent immer Letzter in der Südamerika-Gruppe. Der größte Erfolg der venezolanischen Kicker war 2008 ein überraschender 2:0-Erfolg gegen Brasilien. Um mit der Entwicklung Schritt zu halten, versucht die „Vinotinto“ (die „Weinrote“) verstärkt, ausländische Spieler mit venezolanischen Wurzeln für die Nationalmannschaft zu akquirieren (z.B. Manuel Schmiedebach von Hannover 96). Das venezolanische Freistoßwunder Juan Arango, übrigens auch der beste Freistoßschütze im Videospiel FIFA 14, spielte ebenfalls lange in der Bundesliga bei Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Bis kürzlich die brandneuen Trikots für die Copa América vorgestellt wurden, war mein Trikot das aktuellste Auswärtstrikot Venezuelas. Das Trikot habe ich jüngst in den Kleinanzeigen von eBay gefunden und auf preiswerte 28 Euro herunterhandeln können. Das Design mit den auffälligen textmarkergelben Elementen und dem klassischen weinrot ist für mich eine absolute Augenweide!

Very similar to Paraguay, Venezuela also offers a great amount of incredible water falls, among them also the Salto Ángel, with 979 meters the highest water fall of the world. Venezuela is known as one of the oldest democracies of South America and already banned slavery in 1854. Its name returns to its discoverers who were quite impressed from the Venezuelan architecture on water and therefore named it after the Italian city “Little Venice”. In the early 20^th century, Venezuela was the world’s biggest oil exporter and became founder member of the OPEC. Also, Venezuelan women use to be very beautiful, no other country in the world had more winners at Miss World or Miss Universe elections than Venezuela (recently Gabriela Isler in 2013).

Venezuelan national sport is baseball, but they also really like chicken fights. For a long time, football was only played by university teams which is why Venezuelan football missed the connection to the development of football in South America. Venezuela is the only CONMEBOL team that has never qualified for a WC and that has never played an international match against Germany as well. Since 1966, the Venezuelans tried their luck and consequently finished on the last place in the South American group until 1998. Their greatest victory was a spectacular 2-0 win against Brazil in 2008. To keep face with the development, the “Vinotinto” (the “wine red”) mainly tries to convince foreign footballers with Venezuelan roots to play for their national team (for example Manuel Schmiedebach from Hannover 96). The Venezuelan free kick wonder Juan Arango, who was by the way the best free kicker in the video game FIFA 14, also played in Germany for Borussia Monchengladbach for a long time.

Until they recently presented their new kits on the occasion of the Copa América 2015, my Venezuela shirt has been their actual away shirt. I once found that shirt in the classifieds of German eBay and managed to beat down the price to lucky 28 Euro only. I think that the design with the neon yellow parts and dark red applications is simply a feast for the eyes!

PARAGUAY

Paraguays Landschaft beeindruckt vor allem mit seinen über 275 Wasserfällen. Paraguay verfügt über die größte Marine von allen Staaten auf der Welt ohne direkte Anbindung ans Meer. Solange beide Duellanten registrierte Blutspender sind, sind Duelle in Paraguay bis heute legal. In Paraguay existieren außerdem keine Türklingeln. Das Öffnen von Haustüren erbittet man in Paraguay mit einem lauten Klatschen in die Hände, was aufgrund der dort oft herrschenden Hitze und den damit verbunden regelmäßig weit offenen Fenstern in der Regel vom Hausbesitzer auch vernommen wird. Ebenso beeindruckend wie auch beängstigend finde ich indes den Capybara, das größte Nagetier der Welt, was im Wesentlichen einem stark überdimensionierten Meerschweinchen gleicht und gerne mal in Paraguay angetroffen wird.

Bereits 5 Jahre nach der Gründung des Verbandes wurden die paraguayischen Kicker zur ersten Weltmeisterschaft überhaupt 1930 eingeladen und nahmen seitdem bereits 8 mal an einer WM-Endrunde teil. Zu meinen Lebzeiten war die „Albirroja“ eigentlich Dauergast bei den Turnieren, umso schockierender fand ich, dass die Jungs in der Qualifikation zur WM 2014 noch hinter Bolivien Letzter in der Südamerika-Gruppe wurden. Die Südamerika-Meisterschaften konnte Paraguay bereits zweimal gewinnen (1953 und 1979). Mit Roque Santa Cruz und Lucas Bários kickten zwei der größten paraguayischen Fußballer aller Zeiten lange in der Bundesliga, der beeindruckendste Fußballer aus Paraguay ist allerdings der exzentrische Torwart José Luis Chilavert, der in Vereinen und der Nationalmannschaft gerne mal sämtliche Standards ausführte und in seiner Karriere so insgesamt über 60 Tore erzielen konnte.

Mittlerweile hat sich mein Mini-Ziel, den südamerikanischen Kontinent zu komplettieren, stark konkretisiert. Das schlichte Auswärtstrikot von Paraguay von der WM 2006, welches ich sehr günstig bei eBay schießen konnte, ist dabei ein weiteres wichtiges Mosaik-Steinchen. Das Trikot an sich ist relativ langweilig, wird aber durch das schattierte Muster im Stoff eom wenig aufgewertet.

Duels are still legal in Paraguay as long as both duelists are registered blood donors. In Paraguay, there are now door bells. Whenever you’d like to visit somebody, you just stand in front of the door and clap loudly in your hands. As it is often very hot in Paraguay and therefore the windows usually stand open wide, it is said that the homeowner should hear you normally. Very impressive but also a little scary: the Capybara, which is the biggest rodent in whole nature and basically looks like an oversized guinea pig, and which can be met in Paraguay.

Only five years after its foundation, the Paraguayan FA was invited to the first WC ever in 1930 and participated at 8 WC tournaments since then. In my life-time, Paraguay always was a permanent guest at the tournament as well, so it was a little shock when I noticed that the team finished on last place even behind Bolivia in the qualifiers for WC 2014 in Brazil. Paraguay could win the South American Championship twice (1953 and 1979). Roque Santa Cruz and Lucas Bários, two of the greatest Paraguayan footballers of all time, both played in the German Bundesliga very long. But for me, the most impressive Paraguayan footballer definitely is the eccentric goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert, who used to execute all free-kicks, penalties and even some corners for his club and national team and scored more than 60 goals in his career that way.

Meanwhile, my aim to finish the whole South American continent within my collection, becomes more and more concrete. The plain blue Paraguay away shirt from WC 2006 therefore is another important tessera. The shirt itself seems to quite boring but becomes graded up a little by the shadowy pattern on the front.
