Den Belgiern
verdanken wir nicht nur die Pommes Frites, belgische Waffeln und ausgezeichnete
Pralinen, sondern außerdem Jean-Claude Van Damme, das Manneken Pis und
zahlreiche großartige Comic-Zeichner wie z.B. den „Tim-und-Struppi“-Schöpfer
Hergé. Die belgische Hauptstadt Brüssel ist nicht nur Hauptstadt der
Europäischen Union, sondern auch Sitz der NATO. Neben dem holländisch geprägten
Teil Belgiens (Flandern) und dem französischen (Wallonien) gibt es außerdem die
kleine deutschsprachige Provinz Eupen-Malmedy. In Belgien werden über 800
Sorten Bier gebraut, weshalb malerische Städte wie Gent, Brügge oder Antwerpen
in keinem Bier-Touristenführer fehlen dürfen. Außerdem hält Belgien einen
ebenso beängstigenden wie sympathischen Rekord, das Land war zwischen 2009 und
2011 insgesamt 541 Tage ohne offizielle Regierung.
Nach den
goldenen 20er-Jahren und dem Olympia-Sieg 1920 konnte sich Belgien des Öfteren
für eine WM-Endrunde qualifizieren, das beste Ergebnis sprang dabei 1986 mit
einem vierten Platz heraus. 1980 verlor man zudem das EM-Finale gegen
Deutschland, das Turnier durfte Belgien bereits zweimal selbst austragen. Nach
einer überragenden Qualifikation waren die „Roten Teufel“ („Rode Duivels“) als
Geheimfavorit zur WM 2014 nach Brasilien gefahren, das Team von Trainer-Ikone
Marc Wilmots schlug sich auch äußerst achtbar und musste sich erst im
Viertelfinale gegen Argentinien verabschieden. Mittelfeldregisseur Kevin De
Bruyne, gemeinsam mit Top-Talent Eden Hazard Star der aktuellen Auswahl
Belgiens, steht derzeit in der Bundesliga beim VfL Wolfsburg unter Vertrag.
Das belgische
Trikot von deren Heim-Euro 2000 habe ich dankenswerter Weise als
Wichtelgeschenk in einer Trikotsammlergruppe bei Facebook bekommen. Das Nike-Shirt
mit dem eigenwilligen Rundkragen in Landesfarben ist vergleichsweise sehr
schlicht designet. Mir gefällt allerdings das Wappen des Verbandes – der regelrechte
Buchstabensalat ist die Abkürzung des Verbandes in niederländischer und
französischer Sprache.

Belgian capital Brusseles is not only capital of the European Union but also
seat of the NATO. Besides the Dutch part of Belgium (Flanders) and the French
part (Wallonia) there is also a small German speaking community called
Eupen-Malmedy. In Belgium, there are brewed more than 800 sorts of beer, that’s
why beautiful cities of Gent, Brugge or Antwerp mustn’t be missing in any beer
tourist guide. Belgium also holds a scary but also quite sympathetic record:
between 2009 and 2011 the country has been without an official government for
541 days.

like an expert tip, and the team of coach icon Marc Wilmots did very well and
went out of the tournament in the quarter finals against Argentina lately.
Midfield director Kevin De Bruyne who is the star of the current selection
together with top talent Eden Hazard currently plays for VfL Wolfsburg in the
German Bundesliga.
I got the Belgian jersey which they had worn during their home Euro in
2000 as a Christmas present in a football shirt collectors group on Facebook.
The Nike shirt is designed very plainly despite of its unusual round collar in
the national colors. I especially like the FA’s badge – the high amount of
letters shows the acronym both in Dutch and French.
