Mit Chile in Südamerika verbinde ich in erster Linie seine spezielle Form. Mit 4300 Kilometern ist Chile das längste Land der Welt und fast 25 mal so lang wie breit. Mit Punta Arenas liegt außerdem die südlichste Großstadt der Erde in Chile. Neben malerischen Landschaften rund um die Anden mit ihren atemberaubenden azurblauen Bergseen verfügt Chile auch über die legendäre Atacama-Wüste, die trockenste Wüste der Welt. Was für ein beeindruckendes Land!

Fußballerisch wusste die chilenische Auswahl auch schon ein ums andere Mal zu beeindrucken und ist bis heute eine der erfolgreichsten Fußballauswahlen des südamerikanischen Kontinents. Für den ganz großen Wurf reichte es bislang nicht, allerdings wurde Chile viermal Zweiter bei den Südamerika-Meisterschaften und durfte 1962 sogar die Fußballweltmeisterschaft austragen, wo man mit Platz 3 sein bestes Ergebnis erzielen konnte.

Im Vorfeld der WM 2014 hatte Chile die deutsche Mannschaft trotz einer schmeichelhaften 0:1-Niederlage in einem Freundschaftsspiel über 90 Minuten an die Wand gespielt. Da sich im Team der Chilenen mit Spielern wie Arturo Vidal oder Alexis Sanchez auch gestandene Weltstars wiederfanden, war „La Roja“ einer meiner Geheimfavoriten des Turniers. In der wohl schwersten Gruppe des Turniers mit Spanien, den Niederlanden und Australien setzte man sich problemlos durch, ehe in einem dramatischen Elfmeterschießen wie schon 2010 gegen Brasilien im Achtelfinale Endstation war. In der letzten Minute der Nachspielzeit donnerte Mauricio Pinilla den Ball an die Latte und ließ sich diesen Lattenschuss später großflächig auf den Rücken tätowieren.

Ähnlich wie das Land selbst ist auch das Trikot der Chilenen sehr „speziell“ geformt. Die Taille läuft nach unten hin sehr eng zu und ist im Stoff immer wieder mit gummiartigen Ringen gefasst. Wenn ich etwas athletischer wäre, würde sich das gute Stück sicher perfektioniert an meinen Filigrankörper schmiegen. Im Kragen findet sich der romantische Ausspruch „Puro Chile es tu cielo azulado“ (zu Deutsch: „Rein, Chile, ist dein azurblauer Himmel“). Ein sehr cooles Shirt von einem sehr coolen Land, wie ich finde.

Regarding Chile, I mostly think of ist very special shape. With 4,300 km it is the longest country on earth and nearly 25 times wider than long. The southernmost large city on earth, Punta Arenas, is also in Chile. Besides its pictorial landscape round the Andes with all of their crystal blue mountain lakes Chile also has the legendary Atacama desert, the driest place on earth. What an impressive country!

In football, Chile could also impress and is until now one of the most successful football teams of the South American continent. They never made it to a big title but achieved a second place in the South American Cup four times. In 1962, they hosted the FIFA World Cup and finished in third place which has been their best result ever.

In preparation of the World Cup 2014, Chile somehow outacted the German team for full 90 minutes although they lost the friendly very flattering 0-1. “La Roja” was one of my insider tips for the tournament in Brazil as they have players such as Arturo Vidal or Alexis Sanchez who are well-established world football stars. They made it through the toughest of all groups facing Spain, the Netherlands and Australia without any problems until they lost against Brazil in the round of 16 after a very dramatic penalty shootout. In the last minute of extra time, Mauricio Pinilla hit the bar and later got his shot tattooed large-scale on his back.

Very similar to the country the shirt also has a very “special” shape. Its waist gets very tight at the bottom and there are a few strange rubber rings in the material. Probably it would fit me perfectly if I was more athletically. In the collar you find the romantic slogan “Puro Chile es tu cielo azulado” (in English: “Pure, Chile, is your skyblue heaven”). A very cool shirt from a very cool country if you ask me.
