Äthiopien ist eines der ärmsten Länder der Welt, befindet sich von 187 erfassten Staaten auf Platz 173 des Human Development Index. Dennoch hat der ostafrikanische Staat einige interessante Fakten zu bieten.

Da auf äthiopischem Boden das älteste menschliche Skelett der Welt gefunden wurde, spricht man von Äthiopien auch als „Wiege der Menschheit“. Neben Liberia ist Äthiopien das einzige afrikanische Land, das in seiner Geschichte nie kolonialisiert wurde. Kurios: die äthiopische Zeitrechnung. Die Äthiopier beginnen den Tag, wenn die Sonne aufgeht. Daher beginnt dort die erste Stunde (1 Uhr) quasi erst um 7 Uhr morgens. Da Äthiopien das einzige Land der Welt mit einem 13. Monat ist und man dort Neujahr im September feiert, liegt die äthiopische Zeitrechnung 7,5 Jahre hinter der unseren.

Sportlich ist Äthiopien international vor allem in der Leichtathletik eine Macht, aus Äthiopien stammt übrigens auch der erste Goldmedaillen-Gewinner im olympischen Marathonlauf – barfuß! In ihrer Gründungszeit waren die äthiopischen Fußballer ebenfalls sehr erfolgreich, nach dem Gewinn des Afrika Cups im eigenen Land 1962. Danach konnte man mit den anderen Nationen nicht mehr Schritt halten und zählte lange zu den vermeintlich schwächeren Nationen Afrikas, ehe man erst ab 2005 wieder einen Aufschwung erlebte und nicht nur eifrig in der FIFA-Weltrangliste kletterte, sondern sich auch gegen Ruanda in der Qualifikation durchsetzte und somit erstmals seit langem wieder beim African Cup of Nations 2015 vertreten sein wird. Der derzeit höchstdotierte Kicker aus Äthiopien ist Innenverteidiger Walid Atta vom schwedischen BK Häcken. Der Spitzname des Teams ist „Walyas“ („die Steinböcke“).

Ob das Trikot, dass ich dankenswerterweise als ersten Teil meiner „Starthilfe Nationaltrikots“ vom legendären Sascha Tillmanns erhalten habe, jemals bei einem Spiel getragen wurde, kann ich nicht mit letzter Gewissheit sagen. Gut möglich, dass das schöne grün-gelbe Jersey ein Trainingsshirt des Verbandes ist. Dennoch ein wunderschönes Stück, als Beweisfoto ein Bild von Trainer Sewnet Bishaw.

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries on earth, standing on position 173 in the Human Development Index of only 187 registered countries. Nevertheless there are some very interesting fact about the East Africans.

You could call Ethiopia “the cradle of mankind” because the oldest human skeleton of all time was found on Ethiopian ground. Beside Liberia Ethiopia is the only country in Africa that has never been colonized during its history. Quaint: the Ethiopian calculation of times. Ethiopians start their day when the sun rises, so basically the first hour (1 am) begins at 7 am. As Ethiopia is also the only country in the world that has a 13^th month and that they celebrate New Year’s Eve in September, their time calculation runs 7.5 years behind ours.

Regarding sports, Ethiopia mainly is an international force at athletics. By the way the first gold medal winner of the Olympic Games ever has been an Ethiopian who won the Olympic marathon – with bare feet! During its formative years the Ethiopian footballers were very successful, too. In 1962, they could win the Africa Cup in their own country. Unfortunately, they could not go with the time after that and became one of the less powerful nations in African football. In 2005, they somehow had an upswing that made them climb some stairs at the FIFA world ranking. After a victory against Rwanda in the qualifiers, they made it to the African Cup of Nations again in 2015. The most valuable player of the Ethiopian team is actually defender Walid Atta from the Swedish club BK Häcken. Nick name of the team is “Walyas” (“the capricorns”).

I cannot say definitively whether this beautiful green and yellow shirt was worn by the team during a match. Probably it is some sort of trainings shirt, as you see in the picture of coach Sewnet Bishaw. Thankfully I received the shirt from Sascha Tillmans, the legendary German national shirt collector as some “starting help” for my collection.
